The first thing we need to understand about the way Angels operate is this: they are organized by authority.
Paul writes in Colossians (1:16,)“for by him (Christ) all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities
–all things have been created by him and for him.
I’ve read this verse for years, but it wasn’t until I came to this study that I saw a couple of things that are important for our understanding of the way God’s creation works.
First, the fact that Paul talks about Christ creating both earthly and heavenly rulers and authorities. There are parallel activity going on in creation between the visible and the invisible world. These two realms operate in conjunction with each other, so that what happens in the invisible realm is mirrored in the visible realm. In other words, where there’s a visible earthly King, spiritual rulers are also operating. Not only that, but each realm is organized along definite lines of authority.
We know that Paul’s reference to thrones and dominions refer to both the angelic and the demonic order because satan mimics everything God does. God’s angels are organized along a clear chain of command.
The enemy has his own ranks of demons too (Ephesians 6:12).
As the anointed cherub, satan himself used to be at the top of the angelic chain of command. He was the ruler under God of the angelic realm. Then the Bible mentions another archangel, Michael (Jude 9). There are also the cherubim, who are what we might call the angelic guard. It was two cherubim, who were put at the gate of the Garden of Eden to keep Adam and Eve from going back into the Garden.
Cherubim have a major role to play in protecting the Glory of God.
The seraphim are concerned with the Holiness and worship of God. We met these awe- inspiring creatures in (Isaiah 6). When they worshiped, the whole temple shook. They worshiped God twenty-four hours a day.
Another order or tier of angelic beings is the living Creatures of (Revelations 4). They are unusual creatures engaged in serious worship. This is the angelic order, with each rank of angels functioning under the higher rank. We get a good picture of this angelic order of authority in( Revelation 12:7), Which describes a war in Heaven in which Michael and his angels went to battle against satan and his angels. Here are two angelic armies, under the authority of their respective leaders who were squaring off against each other.
