The devils number one weapon is to attack the mind.In the boxing world we had a saying hit the head the body will follow. We have already learned enough about satan to know that even though he has been decisively and eternally defeated by Jesus Christ, he is not about to lie down and quit. He is still engaged in a great contest, a great war, against God for the souls of men and women. And he has some potent weapons at his disposal. Did you know that the devil can give a lot of stuff? Well he can, because this world has been handed over to him temporarily. And as the devil told Jesus in his temptation, I give it to whomever I wish (Luke 4:6). Satan can give people power, wealth, friends, and fun on a mammoth scale. Scripture says that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one ( 1 John 5:19). So satan can do you some earthly good, but when he dose it he has something bad in mind. It’s sort of like those letters you get in the mail from credit card companies, congratulating you on your outstanding credit history and making you feel special because you have been hand selected from among the masses to receive one of their cards with a high- dollar limit. These letters actually make you think you’ve accomplished something and you deserve a reward. But credit card companies are not out to do you a favor. They have one overriding concern, Which is the interest they hope to collect from you. The buying power they want to give you comes with a high price tag. I’m not trying to equate credit card companies with the devil. But a similar principle is at work. Satan can give you buying power, but he will be there to collect heavy interest when the bill comes due. And the interest he seeks to collect is your destruction. Everything satan dose is wrapped up in lies, because deception is at the heart of everything he dose. Jesus said concerning the devil, he dose not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar, and the father of lies (John 8:44). How many times have you ordered something from a catalog that looks like just what you wanted, but when the product arrives, it doesn’t look nearly as good as it did in the catalog. Satan knows how to put together a glossy, slick looking catalog of temptations. He knows how to make things look good. But Jesus said that satan is incapable of doing anything but lying. He is so thoroughly corrupt that iies are the bone and sinew of his nature. Satan is the ultimate deceiver. He will either make a promise that he doesn’t deliver on, or else he won’t tell you the whole story. When the thing gets delivered, you find out it isn’t what you thought it was, and you don’t like what you are getting. In fact, Jesus called the devil the father of lies because he gave birth to deception. He told the first lie to the angels who followed him in his rebellion. He continued lying in the garden of eden, and he has been at it ever since. He’s out to deceive the whole world. ( Revelation 12:9). And the people he controls are his deceivers too (2 John7). If satan is the father of lies, that means he has a family. Jesus prefaced his statement about the devil in ( John 8:44) by saying to the jewish religious leaders, you are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. Satan has a lot of kids, many of whom don’t know that he is their father. But anyone who dose not know Jesus Christ is a child of the devil. Some who claim to know Jesus Christ are still children of the devil. We aren’t the jugde of people’s hearts, but Jesus said that many people who call him lord will not enter heaven ( Matthew 7:21). Why? Because they have been deceived by the devil into substituting their self righteousness for God’s righteousness. If Satan cannot get you to believe his lies or fall into one of his traps, he will turn around and oppose and resist anything you try to do for God. You can bank on satan’s opposition in your efforts to live for Christ, but that’s a good sign because it means that satan considers you worth opposing. He doesn’t waste his time messing around with people who aren’t doing anything. People who never feel the devil’s opposition probably are not doing much for God. See, the devil knows he can not touch you and me in terms of condemming us to hell. So he is to content to let us go our way as long as we don’t try to invade his kingdom and make an impact for Christ. But when we get serious about serving God, the adversary shows up. He’s not about to stand by and let us plunder his kingdom. Remember, he’s still determined to steal God’s glory, so he is going to oppose anything that brings God glory. It all comes back to the fact that we are in a war with a powerful enemy. But even soldiers in a war are given time to rest and recuperate, How do we get rest from satan, by praising God. The stronger the opposition, the more you need to praise God in the midst of your opposition. Satan can’t handle praise. He’s allergic to worship. He has to flee, because when we praise God, He shows up to enjoy our praises. And satan cannot abide the presence of God. So if your adversary is opposing you hard right now, it’s time to praise, when we praise, we resist satan’s opposition ( James 4:7). The story is told of a farmer who was constantly having his watermelons stolen by thieves. The farmer came up with a brilliant idea to thwart the thieves. He poisoned one watermelon, then put a sign in his watermelon field that read warning, one of these watermelons has been poisoned. He was quite satisfied that his idea had worked and that he would not have a problem with theft anymore. But two days after the farmer put up his sign, He came out to his field to find that his sign had been altered. Someone had scratched through his message and had written, Two of these watermelons have been poisoned. The farmer had to destroy his whole crop because now he didn’t know which other melon was poisoned. that’s what it is like dealing with the devil. No matter what you come up with, he can come up with something better. No matter what sign you put up, he can change the wording. No matter what strategy you devise, you can’t outwit this fellow.
